Starter For Five: Y U QT

Rave tag-team on the best ways to open a DJ set...

Rave culture is a lineage, a mode of being passed from generation to generation. With the internet acting as a vast reservoir of sounds – just try doing a deep-dive on YouTube for more context – a fresh wave of producers, DJs, and digital crate-diggers are emerging. Take Y U QT – two figures immersed in the enigmatic power of rave culture, the pair are renowned for their full throttle DJ sets, and emphatic production style.

Y U QT blend an incredible knowledge of rave lore with a real instinct for what will work in a dance, enabling them to sit at the forefront of newgen UKG, and bass culture more widely. Helping to re-shape UK narratives with their sell-out All Nyte events and festival performances at Boiler Room and Waterworks, new EP ‘For Real Super Life’ lands this Friday (February 28th).

CLASH caught up with Y U QT to explore the best ways to open a DJ set in Starter For Five.

INVT – ‘We Inside’ ft. Logan (Culebra VIP)

Love this song as the first track of the set if we’re playing later or earlier. Chilled but still got the vibes and energy we bring.

Y U QT x Dusky – ‘Rush’ ft. Scrufizzer

We started with this song as the first track in the set for ‘Forever’. It sets the night off, and if we’re playing after another DJ, it breaks it up nicely. It’s Happy/Uplifting and has a different rhythm to normal.

CARIBOU – ‘Broke My Heart’ (Champion Remix)

You’ve heard it, right? The intro is unreal, beautiful stuff.

Bullet Tooth – ‘Keep It Rolling’ ft. Capo Lee

One of the best songs in the last few years, IMO. So intense and bass-driven with the intro spirit of a lion.

Megra – ‘Pyrophobia’

Such a good producer, this one is super tight and grooving, so lends itself well to an opening track.

‘For Real Super Life’ will be released on February 28th.
