An island is a special place to grow up.
Completely surrounded by water, the feeling of being cut off, alone and stoutly independent feeds into its inhabitants.
Sorren MacLean grew up on the island of Mull, off the west coast of Scotland. Part of the inner hebrides, it's an area which he returns to frequently – both in his life and his art.
New EP 'Way Back Home' is out now via Middle Of Nowhere Recordings, and Clash took this opportunity to invite Sorren MacLean to reflection on the islands.

Spending time travelling playing music, through various parts of the world, whether it's rural Europe or packed cities, I always feel drawn to the islands on the west coast of Scotland. There is a magic there that you just don't get anywhere else in the world – although it's a bit harder to see during the winter!
The stories etched into the coastline are apparent in the outline of the cliffs on the ferry journey over. The moment you set foot on the pier you get a feeling of ease. You no longer have to lock your car or even take the keys out the ignition!
With such inspiring landscapes, remote beaches, and a rich history, creating music or art on the Island comes easy. This has led to many artistic people choosing to base themselves here.
For me, the Atlantic Ocean is one of the biggest, most inspiring draws. The sea is a dramatic, dangerous and beautiful thing, that when treated with respect can reward you with sightings of incredible wildlife and a fascinating history. It is what shapes the dramatic landscape, and indeed the people that live there.
It's what brings so many people to the Islands, to experience the Hebrides for themselves. And where I am lucky enough to call my home. What better place to live, grow and make music. A true reflection of an island.
