Blending the old with new, the analogue with the digital and the whiskey with the coke, Son Of Dave – AKA Benjamin Darvill – has forged a new path for blues music.
Using hip-hop beats and a variety of samples, latest album ‘03’ is perhaps the biggest leap forward for the blues since John Lee Hooker bought his first electric guitar. Covering War’s classic ‘Low Rider’, as well as reworking a Muddy Waters standard with ‘I Just Wanna Get High With You’, the album is a swaggering testament to a life lived on the wrong side of the tracks.
Previous single ‘Old Times Were Good Times’ sets out the stall for Son Of Dave in explicit terms. Acknowledgement of the past, but an appreciation for its faults, and the possible solutions offered by the future – ‘Old Times Were Good Times’, he says, but new times could be better.
