Singles Roundup: 27th October

This Weeks Top Releases

Other than ardent gabba-obsessed Vinyl junkies and X Factor fans, we’re not actually sure who buys singles anymore. Which is a shame, especially with the current batch set to be unleashed upon your lobes like a sonic butterfly (or something).

Single Of The Week: The View ‘5 Rebbeccas’

First up out of the traps with mammoth, Owen Morris assisted guitars and endless youthful exuberance, its a storming comeback from Clash faves The View with ‘5 Rebbeccas’. Sounding like ‘Superstar Tradesman MKII’, Kyle chirps about “floating with the schemers and the part time halloweeners”, proving their comebcack is also perfectly timed for fans of freaky Friday. Come the chorus and the emotive turnaround of “The one i love the most / has turned into a junkie” shows they still have the knack. Single of the week by a few hundred aeons.

Next up is one of Scotland’s best new bands Kid Canaveral, who had already won us over with dynamite pop nuggets ‘Smash Hits’ and ‘Couldn’t Dance’. Their new AA side single however sees the taking in Grrrl Group femme-pop (‘Second Time Around’) and yet another super-catchy dose of Scotia indie with ‘Missing Me’ . Sadly we couldn’t track down a video for their new single, but here’s a sampler from the band’s debut album, due out soon on Fence Records.

Snow Patrol are also returning this week, which will either have you running for your copy of the F*cked Up album or whistling along on your way to Homebase next Sunday. ‘Take Back The City’ is deeply inoffensive, has a mildly likeable soft rock chorus and should see Gary Lightbody & co. nearing their way to being able to buy a small country soon.

Next it’s the haunting tones of nu-folk frauline Laura Marling, with the rather beautiful, Mazzy Star-does-halloween echoes of ‘Night Terror’. A highlight from her often overlooked debut ‘Alas, I Cannot Swim’, ‘Night Terror’ may well be her best single to date.

Last but not least, its the new single from Borrell and his band Razorlight, whose choir-flecked, earnest ballad ‘Wire To Wire’ will have Lightbody nibbling his nails whilst tuning in to Radio 2. “You’ve been looking for someone to believe in” quivers Borrell, sounding more like Meat Loaf at every turn. Nonetheless, this is a massive song, and Razorlight’s ambitions are clearly headed towards the stadiums as opposed to a Brixton squat.
