Featuring Bat For Lashes, Josh Kumra, Bon Jovi...
Bat For Lashes

A New Year, a new batch of possibilities...

To some, January 1st is just another day, another page on the calendar. The nostalgic soul within the ClashMusic team, though, sees it somewhat differently. When the bells chime to ring in a New Year we find it almost impossible not to get swept up in the emotion of a shifting year.

Slates are swept clean, doors are closed and the future arrives.

Here are the singles.

Single Of The Week

Bat For Lashes – A Wall
Oh Natasha, you really don’t know what you’re doing to us… Bat For Lashes can capture and break our heart in one fell swoop. One of 2012’s most welcome returns, ‘The Haunted Man’ was a typically idiosyncratic effort finding Khan using her imagination to pole vault over an barriers placed on her creativity. ‘A Wall’ is a case in point: in lesser hands it’s sumptuous synth-pop could stray into Florence territory, but Bat For Lashes have enough in their locker to pull them out of such an unfortunate fate. Beautiful.

...and the rest!

Bon Jovi - Because We Can

Yep, they’re still going. Yep, they’re still fairly guff.

Josh Kumra – Waiting For You

Well this is fun. Sure, Josh Kumra’s soulful stomp won’t adhere him to the purists out there, but if you look beyond slick marketing campaigns there’s a talented artist under here. File next to Olly Murs as a Guilty Pleasure.

Kendrick Lamar – Backseat Freestyle

Having dominated Stateside hip hop in 2012 Kendrick Lamar seemingly intended to kick off the New Year with the same momentum. ‘Backstreet Freestyle’ has become something of a calling card, showing off the rapper’s smoky, laid back flow. Now backed with a classy back and white promo clip, this is the sound of an MC rapidly coming into his own. Expect to hear a lot from Kendrick Lamar in 2013.
