Welcome to Clashmusic’s round up of singles released today, 28th March 2011. Well, the ones I have an opinion on anyway
Out today are new releases from Burial, Glasvegas, Jim Jones Revue, Claire Nicholson & Yellowhammer, The Kills and Pigeon Detectives.
Burial – ‘Street Halo’
Released just a week after it was announced, a suitably modern delivery mechanism for such a sleek, ominous track, the secretive Burial re-surfaces with a new 12″ with lead track ‘Street Halo’. Easily indentifiable as Burial, the haunting synth strings and disembodied vocal over heavy duty percussion, this just displays that Burial is an artist who just gets better and better.
Glasvegas – ‘Euphoria, Take My Hand’
Another act easily indentified by their unique sound is Glasgow’s Glasvegas. Much maligned, I did enjoy their debut album (well, it started well and tailed off) but the chugging rhythm driving of ‘Euphoria, Take My Hand’ doesn’t work for me. They’d have been better not replacing departed drummer lady and staying in widescreen, atmospheric, free floating mode. It’s a bad sign when the best bit of the song is the swelling final seconds.
Jim Jones Revue – ‘Dishonest John’
Up next are a band who managed to do the whole travelling rock’n’roll revival thing without annoying me. I can only guess it’s down to the enthusiam of the performance, as witnessed in the accompanying ‘Later…’ clip here, you know they aren’t faking it.
Claire Nicolson & Yellowhammer – You & I
A blissful slice of shimmering, adult pop from Claire Nicholson and Yellowhammer (Yellowhammer being Claire’s brother, and Screamadelica engineer/producer, Hugo Nicholson). Doing the kind of thing Morcheeba, Chung King and their ilk peddled ten years ago is no bad thing when the results are this refreshing.
The Kills – ‘Satellite’
Rescued from Jack White’s deathly grasp, Alison Mossheart is back with her musical partner Jamie Hince for a filthy, fuzzy bass powered return, ‘Satellite’. Doing a runner from a chipper not withstanding (watch the video), I can wholeheartedly recommend this.
Pigeon Detectives – ‘Done In Secret’
Well, hello. Here’s a blast from the past but can they prove themselves a necessary addition to 2011’s over-stuffed airwaves? Well given that they’ve pilfered the riff from The Strokes ’12:51′, it’s points off to begin with. Other than that, it’s your perky indie-rock. You may have heard something similar previously.
