Welcome to the column that never ends, our weekly round up of the singles. Well, it’s a random selection from my inbox that I was intrigued enough about to hit play on. Arbitrary? yes but I’m in charge.
And so, we have the latest from Justice, Beat Connection, Matt And Kim, Elephant and Santigold. If I had to chose a Single of the Week (and I do) I’d go for Matt And Kim and ‘Let’s Go’. Also, can we get the basketball chap in the video on Britain’s Got Talent asap? He’s a dead cert to win it.
Justice – Newlands
If you didn’t know who Justice were you’d quite happily believe this was some lost classic from 1970s France. It’s hard to equate the AOR stylings here with Justice early dancefloor pulverisers. It may all be made electronically by two greasy-rocker styled dance music masters but the end result is really quite straight laced and a bit unremarkable.
Beat Connection – The Palace Garden, 4am
New band for me here and it’s a pleasant surprise (always nice when that happens). A bit flittery, a bit blissed out, ‘The Palace Garden, 4am’ is a semi-submerged chunk of power pop mastery. I haven’t seen an official video but I imagine them to be playing the song in the surf on some golden beach as the beautiful people cavort nearby.
Matt And Kim – Let’s Go
We once had a notion to try Q&A sessions on Twitter with Matt being our first guinea pig. It didn’t go that well. We’d collected approved questions previously but he was bombarded by fans questions and it all went off track. We tried a couple more but it didn’t really work unlike… (wait for it…) Matt and Kim’s cracking new single ‘Let’s Go’.
Elephant – Golden
Another out of left field for me and, despite fearing a bland out, ‘Golden’ lives up to it’s name. It’s kinda shiny, sounds expensive and doesn’t move very quickly (unless it’s in the pocket of a ned off to WebuyURgold4£s high street branch). Yeah, one to accompany a G&T on the deck of some Caribbean cruise as the Sun goes down.
Santigold – The Keepers
Another modern classic from Santigold. Modern, sassy and sharp, Santigold delivers again with everyone’s early bets on her superstar prospects getting paid back in full. Rhianna? Gaga? Beyonce? Phah! Santigold should be the one being adored.
