Some celebrate an anniversary with jewels, others a simple balloon; in the case of Self-Portrait, the gauntlet was passed to the humble sweatshirt.
Collaborating with the artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset (responsible for those flower focused motifs, soon to be found smothering Instagram, surely?), the sweatshirts in question here, are a grander affair than your average navy/grey/black with subtle branding choice.
Launched a year ago by the Malaysian born, Central Saint Martins educated Han Chong, Self-Portrait readily admits to emulating a ‘street style’ aesthetic in what it does (a contemporary interpretation of femininity for the most part, not exactly soft but lighter than any Rick Owens number).
And what better way to confirm its social status than with an instantly recognisable object; a fashion piece that straddles several styles, capable both of pulling a look together or covering ones modesty on one of those Sundays.
It’s sort of genius, really.
Limited to 250 units per sweater, the non-dated pieces will drop exclusively into Selfridges next week (sadly not via stalks), while the latter land online later in the month.
