Ahead of the release of his debut single,’What You Look For’, out September 8th, Clash caught some time with Sam Beeton, a talent young singer/songwriter we previous said was “Armed with catchy pop tunes that make his music accessible to absolutely everyone”
How are you today?
Very good, yes, thank you sir,
What’s an average day in the life of Sam Beeton involve lately?
Well I gets up, have a cuppa, speak to someone on the phone, get in a bus, go to a room, talk to a lady with some question for me, go to another room, have a cuppa and go on stage, sing my songs for an hour or two, go to another room, bust a beverage, smile, sleep.
Your next single, ‘What You Look For’ was co-written with Eg White, how was the experience of writing with someone of his calibre?
Well he is a well known writer, so yes, it was nice to work with someone of his calippo, He makes a mean cup of tea.
The lyrics for WYLF really resonated with me as I’m a heffer and my ex’s new love is a personal trainer! Have you had any similar experiences, although you’re extremely good looking and talented so I’m doubtful…
Pfft, you ain’t no heffer, don’t beat yourself up about it. it’s really an observation of behavior, that we all compare ourselves with others, which is funny.
Can you tell us about the recording process to ‘No Definite Answer’?
Yeah, the process was a long one, 2 years in the making, and recorded in Nottingham, London and L.A. The hardest part was chopping it all down to 13 tracks, as I’m quite a prolific writer. All in all, I’m pleased with the mix of material I have on the record. Most of the sessions for the record went from 10pm to 3 or 4am, and in the first year I was still in school. tut tut.
What can we expect from the album?
A great collection of songs, nothing more nothing less.
19 is pretty young to be catapulted into the limelight…we don’t want you ending up like Britney! How do you keep yourself grounded?
I take regular trips to the gp, to check that I ain’t disappeared up my own…ahem. I just remember that I’ve a long way to go, and that I write songs, that all. Anyway, I was born grounded, I’ll die grounded.
Who are your idols?
George Harrison, Mike Scott, Bill Murray.
We hear James Blunt may be a fan but I’m not sure how he feels about you being called a less nauseating version of him? How do you feel about such comments? Would you agree?
Don’t care really, if they say that I suppose thats cool. Who is this Blunt anyway?
Your Dad was in The Drains? Did you grow-up like Mark Ronson, in a house full of famous musicians and all that surrounds living with a rock ‘n’ roll Dad?
Yes, accept the house was full of infamous musicians!
If you could form any tribute band, which band would you choose and what would you call yourself?
A band called Whiskeytown. err WhiskeyFrown?
What’s next for Sam Beeton?
Prolificness.
We hear you are a multi-instrumentalist – what do you play exactly?
Guitar, Bass, Drums, piano, saxophone(badly), Banjo and the fool of course.
What’s the highlight of your career so far?
Punching a reviewer. mwahhaha. no actually, every second of it, It’s been one huge highlight.
Sam’s debut single, ‘What You Look For’ is released 7th September with his album, ‘No Definite Answer’, following on 29th September.
