Private Passions: The Wombats

Murph's golfing love

This month, Murph from The Wombats and his love for the golfing life.

“When I was thirteen I had a friend in school whose dad used to play. We went to the local municipal ninehole course – I suppose I hit a few good shots and you just end up hooked. As I got older other friends played so I joined a golf club and slowly, completely fell in love with the game. In the summer when I was sixteen or seventeen I would play three rounds in a day. I’d be there from about eight in the morning until it went dark. I wanted to be professional – I did win a competition once but because my status was junior the golf club took it away from me and gave it to someone else. Which was annoying!

I’ve played some amazing golf courses, it’s hard to pick a favourite. The golf courses in Dubai are incredible – I played every day when we went out there. Cost me a fortune. I guess it is quite relaxing but it can really piss you off. I’ve thrown clubs around the green, wrapped putters around trees. There’s two things which draw you back: the idea of playing against yourself – it’s all kind of inwardly focused, which makes it an interesting game – and obviously the feeling inside when you hit a great shot or post a great score. You can’t really experience that anywhere else.”
