Ones To Watch – Alpines

'Night Pop' pioneers

“We feel like we’re making pop music but it’s a bit deeper and a bit darker than the stuff that’s in the charts,” begins Bob Matthews, one half of London-based outfit, Alpines. “We’re calling it ‘Night Pop’.”

Although it seems like a strange title to bestow upon yourself – bordering perhaps on pretention – there is definitely something in the moniker, and it isn’t until you watch Rankin’s sultry video for Hannah Marshall’s S/S11 collection, or more importantly the Alpines tune that soundtracks it, that you can properly realise the vision. It was played at London Fashion Week to introduce her show and fits the haunting mood perfectly.

Whilst Matthews masterfully mans the keyboards and production, it’s his band mate, Catherine Pockson who writes and delivers the intense vocals that will stay with you long after the track has finished. If we had to point you in any direction it would be to a smattering of trip-hop, with an Elizabeth Fraser vocal sending shivers down your spine.

Having met a mere eighteen months ago the two are already working on their debut album, with an aimed release date of September. Trust us, you’ll be hearing more from Alpines.
