“I’ve always admired travelling businessmen,” Lykke Li tells Clash, “preferably Italian, in their tailored suits, shiny loafers and cigarette pants.”
Speaking of the reference points for her debut fashion foray – as opposed to some sartorially focused Lonely Hearts application – the extent of which is released today via a 30-piece collaboration with & Other Stories.
“I tried to make a female version of that,” she continues, “of course with a bohemian twist.” Said twist being most prominent in the jewellery that makes up a third of the collection, all long gold chains and abstract shaped rings.
The aforementioned Italian vibes meanwhile, are strongest in the accessories department; here leather tote bags are positively tidy, slides much sleeker than your average, and loafers come by way of an understated sense of wow.
That the singer’s dream customer is Charlotte Rampling, only further amplifies the collection’s aesthetic: it’s chic, sophisticated and of a high quality, it’s also incredibly modern, though that could be the edge Lykke’s name lends.
Having joined forces, ‘laughter and anecdotes’ with her friends – fellow Swedes who just happened to work for H&M’s sister label – Lykke Li’s collection is, if legend is to be believed, a fashion editor’s dream. The reason? Sans jewellery and a single white shirt, it is exclusively black, the shade both prominent in her own touring wardrobe and evident in her music, characterised now by the mood of three albums.
“I think we all strive for simplicity, necessity and longevity,” she offers lastly, responding to questions of Scandinavia’s style credentials, “Which itself is not a bad concept for life either.”
