Newcomers Of 2010 – The Drums

One of the year’s coolest pop band

Having survived the burden of hype at the beginning of 2010, The Drums emerged as one of the year’s coolest pop bands. Indebted to English songsmiths such as The Smiths and Orange Juice, The Drums were always going to explode on these shores before their home turf. They shrugged off the pressure, wrote simple yet bouncingly catchy tunes about surfing, and stole the summer with joyous festival sets. Their eponymous debut offered exuberant post-punk rhythms built upon a self-effacing DIY ethic. “The whole album was recorded with no money,” singer Jonathan Pierce told Clash. “We just did our best.” Lucky for them that incessant hooks and contagious melodies cost nothing.

Did You Know? Guitarist Adam Kessler left the band in September. The group are continuing without him.
