Newcomers Of 2010 – Lissie

Bruised one minute, defiant the next

Back in March of this year, Clash was following Lissie’s trail around the myriad venues of South By South West, the new music conference/festival in Austin, Texas. Having been impressed by what we’d heard before embarking on the adventure, by its end we were truly smitten – the rest of the world fell under her spell following the release of her debut, ‘Catching A Tiger’ in June. Breathtaking sultry vocals adorn countrified pop that extols her upbringing on the banks of the Mississippi. She can bruised one minute then defiant the next; the album’s emotions are naked and enthralling, and it’s all down to her voice. The fragility of ‘Bully’ and the echoing humility of ‘Everywhere I Go’ sees Lissie at her emotive best. If only ‘Catching A Tiger’ hadn’t been a debut, Lissie would find herself in the upper reaches of this year’s album chart.

Did You Know? Instead of using a guitar pick, Lissie puts superglue on the nail of her forefinger to strengthen it before every gig.
