Maverick Sabre

A genuine hit single is a difficult beast to pin down.

Pop history is littered with glorious failures and unexpected triumphs - put simply, there really are no rules to this thing.

So Clash decided to recruit a genuine pop star for our latest column. Maverick Sabre has notched up more Top Ten singles than most, and recently re-visited his smash hit 2012 album 'Lonely Are The Brave' by giving it a full vinyl re-issue.

Handed the steering wheel for our latest column, you can find his thoughts below.

Will Young – 'Thank You'

Have never really sat with Will Young's music to take it in properly before, and have to say this is a bit of a tune. Got a Lennon/McCartney vibe to it as well as touches of Gospel. If it's a new direction for Young then I'm really looking forward to hearing the rest.

Vanessa Carlton – 'Blue Pool'

Feels like I should be driving through the Nevada desert in a convertible listening to this. Quite a dreamy record with angelic chords and harmonies. Would have liked to hear it really kick off towards the end with a build up on production but I suppose that's the beauty of it... feels like it would be a perfect sunset festival tune to hear live.

Tourist ft. Josef Salvat & Niia – 'Holding On'

This is a nice head bopper - always a fan of male/female duets. Simple house/dance record... does what it says on tin!

Sigma ft. Ella Henderson – 'Glitterball'

Always been a fan of how classic Ella Henderson's voice is... not just your average pop vocal - almost has a country twist to it. The boys have done well with this... all you need from a massive pop/dance record! If you hear this live I guarantee you'll want to shake a leg or two...

Willis Earl Beal - 'Flying So Low'

This is my shit! Big vocals... Bobby Womack feel off this tune... first time I've heard of Beal... definitely has got himself a new fan...

Jax Jones – 'Yeah Yeah Yeah'

Got a Rudimental feel to this... nice blues/soul vocal carrying the song through... wanted more from the chorus to lift it, though. Feels like a very current format to have on a dance record, and makes me want to hear more from Jax Jones.
