LIGHT: Not just for the colour palette – where pastels reigned supreme – but noted also in the airy bandeau dresses, transparent textures, delicate reading glasses and mood (see motifs of mobile phone clutching hands and exclamation marks). Holly Fulton’s AW14 collection was a soft affair, despite the sharper geometric patterns flaunted across several looks.
Top Look 6: A silk spaghetti strap dress.
FLORAL: Models at John Rocha were dressed up as flowers, their figures, necks and faces submerged in ruffles or adorned with appliqued flowers and petal like crochet. Far from a traditional summer floral, here colours were deep, the fabrics intense and a strong sense of romance apparent. Double buckled shoes were wonderfully bulky, adding a sense of modernity to proceedings.
Top Look 18: A red velvet coat and large rose choker.
WITCHCRAFT: There were vibes aplenty at (formerly Sister by) Sibling’s Saturday show: flamenco sass was offered in the shape and movement of look 17 and the like, floor reaching tails and wide brimmed hats showed witchy intentions, and the clean bright knit/indigo denim combinations created almost a daywear segment. A case of witchery played tricks with the longer hemlines, as Phoebe Collings-James discarded her shoes on the runway, ultimately increasing affection levels for the artist-cum-model, the collection and the designers.
Top Look 15: A black and purple dress and cape combo.
CONSTRUCTION: A term that probably applies to most Phoebe English collections, such is the designer’s aesthetic, this season’s presentation sampled the theme with three smashed plaster plinths set up for models to pigeon step between. The looks themselves bore witness to black netting – as it trademark territory for English – plus heavier striped fabrics. Elsewhere pockets hung on the outside and plaited silk fell loose.
