A fresh approach to beats

Beats. The backbone of most electronic music. We all love them yet often yearn for a fresh approach to using them. Hello, Brainfeeder.

Started in 2008 in Los Angeles by alt.hop pioneer Flying Lotus, the Brainfeeder label hosts an array of alternative electronic talent, loosely characterised by a shared desire to disrupt the well-trodden beat template, whether through the twisted odd-hop of Samiyam, the Gaslamp Killer’s broken beats and sinister psychedelia or the trippy glitched ruminations of Fly Lo himself. Essentially, the label’s musical ethos is simple but highly effective: “Experimentation,” says Adam Stover, Brainfeeder’s Label Manager. “Brainfeeder is many ideas in one,” he explains. “At the time when we began, many of our artists were considered ‘outsiders’ in the musical landscape of Los Angeles, and the rest of the world for that matter. The label is a vehicle to express, in any form that our artists choose, their sound and vision without constraint.”

That vision has already been taken around the globe by the Brainfeeder crew, touring as a collective as well as releasing records closer to home from impressive new signings like Lorn. Brainfeeder artist Daedelus confirms the importance unique drive behind the label: “I’ve been on a number of different labels and this certainly feels much more directed - much more focused, more empowered. They know what fight they’re fighting, and it’s a beautiful thing.”
