King Charles Reviews The Singles

"Low key, dreamy, and on the dollar..."

King Charles is a deeply independent, headstrong talent.

Releasing debut album 'Loveblood' back in 2012, the singer won a devoted cult audience. Yet deep down he felt dis-satisfied, slightly troubled by the music he had made.

Returning to the root, the source of his creativity, King Charles has now completed work on a long-awaited follow up. New album 'Gamble For A Rose' arrives on January 22nd, and it's a stirring return from a unique talent.

With only days to go, King Charles took time out from focussing on his album to review this week's singles…

NERO – 'Into The Night'

This isn’t really my sort of music so I can’t claim to know that much about it. That said, I can see it ticking a number of boxes that will get hands in the air. I can feel the atmosphere it’s trying to create and it certainly sounds expensive!

Zara Larsson – 'Lush Life'

This is the girl who did the massive track with MNEK last year, right? I absolutely love this and she’s got some serious style: low key, dreamy, and on the dollar. Funky, upbeat and perfect for her crisp vocal.

Rachel Platten – 'Stand By You'

This is pseudo pop star production by numbers at its not-so-finest and so is the video. It's contrived, despite the message it’s trying to get across with the lyrics. Not one I’ll be listening to again…

Stooshe – 'Lock Down'

This bunch have good voices but I’m not sure I buy it. This kind of 90s R&B/pop-vibe is pretty-well trodden but seems to be making a comeback of late. It’s nothing new and won’t be making it to my tracks of 2016, but it’s got a good beat and I’m sure fans will like it.

High Highs – 'Cascades'

This track and video are so light and airy, I feel like I’ve been pulled into a musical meringue. Perfect for a lazy afternoon or the soundtrack to a Skins-esque montage.
