With no tabloid endorsed off screen hook ups (cough Rachel Bilson and Hayden Christensen, cough), no science fiction and no weak script dragging on for an hour and a half, Justin Anderson’s ‘Jumper’ couldn’t be any futher from the 2008 feature film of the same name; and for that Clash is thankful.
Instead the five minute clip boasts a cinematic style similar to Yorgos Lanthimos’s ‘Dogtooth’ and ‘I Am Love’ by Luca Guadagnino, all the while doused in brights, prints and knits by Jonathan Saunders, for whom (and perhaps more importantly, with whom), the short was made.
As his label celebrates a decade anniversary, the Scotsman’s attentions turned to cinema, something – so we are told – he is ‘fiercely passionate about’, using it throughout his career as the starting block for collections aplenty (read: ten years of women’s, men’s, resort and pre-fall).
For ‘Jumper’, which shares not just a wardrobe but moreover a whole focus on palette with the label (note the turquoise of the pool, the rich grass colour and the succulent red bedsheets), both David Hockney’s ‘swimming pool series’ and Pier Paolo Pasolini’s 1968 film ‘Teorema’ were key influences.
The result is fiercely seductive and ultimately satisfying, something Bilson and co sadly never mustered, depsite the extra time (and presumably greater budget).
