Incoming Distractions

Next week's releases assessed

Like a staggering middle aged drunk turning up for his pub football team, Incoming Distractions is back, on this fine Saturday morning.

Regulars of the site will have noticed ID now has a partner in crime, in the form of the cunningly named ‘Singles Roundup’. As we throw superlatives about the future in true Nostradamus fashion, Singles Round Up will follow us up in perfect harmony with a mid week retort, a review of relevant releases.

Last week was nice wasn’t it? AC/DC must’ve melted your face, and then that video from Keane? If you haven’t seen it yet, I recommend a glance. You are treated to a revitalised Tom Chaplin, looking very dapper, sprinting through a forest… for four minutes. One question, when you do watch it, who wears a collared shirt underneath a collared shirt? It is completely unorthodox apparel and I disagree with it. Luckily, the delightfully vigorous pop rock of ‘Lovers Are Losing’ distracts from any clothing qualms.

The forthcoming distractions of the week ahead are enough to drive the most complex of minds to turmoil. If your ears have just recovered from the “menacing blood brother” that was Clash Album Of The Week, ‘Black Ice‘, then more chaotic riff-riding awaits you in the shape of Eagles Of Death Metal. Many will know EODM for their Queens of The Stone Age member Josh Homme but these boys actually write some roaring tunes, with splashes of humour throughout, and cement themselves as a real novelty to behold. One could not hold back a smile when the band were harshly humiliated by Axl Rose, who labelled them “Pigeons of Shit Metal”, and they replied with “Although Axl tried to November rain on our parade, no sweet child o’ mine can derail the EODM night train. We say live and let die”.

The bass playing leviathan that is Squarepusher will be adding a little more anarchy to our week with his indescribable DIY approach to the dance/electronica cross over. He possesses, arguably, the strongest little finger in the world, as he makes the bass guitar his proverbial bitch with deep bending rhythms, accompanied by fashioned beeps and squeaks. To appreciate the true talent of this man, one has to look up a live performance. If you feel your ready for it, then get a hold of new album, ‘Just A Souvenir’, on Monday.

Intimacy‘ is out. Yay! Wait. Did this not come out two months ago? Have I not been listening to it and reading reviews for weeks and weeks? Well nobody can really explain the massive gap between download and physical release of ‘Intimacy’. Let’s not get into the business of questioning Bloc Party. They play damn good music and that shall suffice.

Officer Kicks and Kid Canaveral provide this weeks exciting new music releases. The latter come straight from the plenteous talent fields of bonnie Scotland with ‘Second Time Around’. Their previous releases include the charmingly tongue-in-cheek ‘Smash Hits’ that promised much more to come from the hyped four-piece. On the flip side, Officer Kicks contrive a raw sound that screams Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Us lucky folks at Clash managed to get an early listen of new single ‘Dirty Sally’. here. Los Campesinos! still feel like new music to me. It must be their bright clothes, fresh sound and childlike, sugar rush stage presence. If our Track Of The Day is anything to go by, ‘We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed’ threatens to deliver even more fabulous indie-pop.

For those who want great music and want it now, there are some seasoned professionals letting new material out of the cage on Monday. Glasgow based Snow Patrol unleash ‘A Hundred Million Suns’, which has seen early rumours of an attempt to broaden their style. Laura Marling gently describes her lumpy mattress with ‘Night Terror‘ and the ever present Razorlight return with the electrician’s delight of ‘Wire To Wire’. Try your luck for their new album here. And for pudding, Kitsune pie. Volume 6 of their compilation series turns physical on Monday. If you have not heard of Kitsune then you need to buy a leather jacket, slick back your hair, and embrace French electro. For a sneak taster, check out our exclusive Kitsune mix.

THE VIEW! THE VIEW! THE VIEW ARE… back with a new single, that still bears that mischievous tearaway sound that made ‘Hats Off To The Buskers’ the must-have album of 2007. The Dundee boys have always been close to our heart so we took pride in getting the video for ‘5 Rebeccas’ straight onto the website, before release.
