In The Works – Explosions In The Sky

New album progress

There’s been eruptions in the studio for Explosions In The Sky…

“We move at a pretty slow pace,” says Explosions’ drummer Chris Hrasky in way of explaining the three year wait between the critically-acclaimed ‘All Of A Sudden I Miss Someone’ and their forthcoming sixth album. Life, it seems, got in the way of work, as the band members married, had children, and generally made their song writing process even more laborious than usual.

“It’s interesting because we find it to be our strangest and more adventurous record than what we’ve done before,” he adds, “so I would say that it’s probably the least domesticated of our records.”

Though the sparkling dynamics of the Austin-based instrumentalists remains, the four members pushed their own boundaries after deciding to shake things up after being together for a decade.

“We went about everything with this record in a very different way,” Chris says. “It was written in a different way, recorded in a different way, there was a lot more stuff going on, there’s a lot more layers, structures of the songs are just a little bit different from what people have come to expect from us, and that was a big thing; we mostly wanted to surprise ourselves with it, and not just fall into the same pattern that maybe we’ve done or overdone so far.”

With all the songs written before entering the studio, the album is almost complete – but Chris is being tight-lipped on further details, since Explosions prefer the old-fashioned pre-release secrecy that builds excitement. “I don’t know if it’s nostalgia or what it is, but we try to keep things a little secret, or as secretive as possible.”
