Good Trip, Bad Trip: Whenyoung

Touring advice from the Irish risers...

Irish three-piece Whenyoung tore up the rulebook in 2018.

Spending every available second on the road, the band's electrifying live shows took them to fresh heights.

Debut EP 'Given Up' was a precocious introduction, and with the trio heading straight back to the studio it seems the coming year promises a bounty of wares.

With the New Year a matter of hours old Clash hooked up with Whenyoung to find out some touring tales for the latest instalment of Good Trip, Bad Trip…

Best trip…

We loved supporting The Vaccines on their European dates on the continent. Getting to play and travel to different countries every day is an amazing experience.

Worst trip…

Earlier this year we got stranded on the motorway in heavy snow. We ended up being stuck outside Europe’s Largest Sex Shop on the motorway and pushing the van to the refuge of a Faulty Towers-esque hotel close by. It was a combination of hilarious and disastrous.

Favourite foreign venue…

I love Ancienne Belgique in Brussels. It has a beautiful red interior and a rich history with the likes of Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel having performed there.

We are surprisingly popular in…

I’m surprisingly popular in Limerick. Haha… this is our hometown!

Best or worst exotic foodstuff…

Danish salted liquorice is pretty freaky. We love the classic French baguette and Brie.

Most interesting individual you’ve met on the road…

We met Buzzcocks earlier this year when we played with them in Manchester and again when they were on the same lineup at Y Not. Their music is a big inspiration to us so we were over the moon to meet them and all the better when your heroes are so kind and welcoming. Pete Shelley was a very sweet man.

Worst on tour injury, or infection or accident…

Andrew fell down the stairs at the Lexington in London with a 300W amp. It gives me shivers thinking about it.

My essential travel item…

A good book, headphones, notebook, face mask.

My essential travel tip…

Try to get enough sleep. Life on the road can be exhausting with late nights and early mornings so take a nap when you can.
