New York rockers on tour memories…

Clash’s Good Trip, Bad Trip spot asks bands about their very best – and worst – touring experiences, and a little more besides. This time, it’s Drowners’ vocalist and guitarist Matt Hitt who’s filling us in on his on-the-road recollections. Be sure to catch the band at this year’s The Great Escape – they play Clash’s stage at Coalition on May 8th. Details here.

Best Trip…

“Definitely Brazil. We’d never been before, and the promoters and fans were amazing. Also, it was the first time we’d ever had separate hotel rooms... luxury.”

Worst Trip…

“We haven’t had any bad ones, thus far. Touch wood!”

Our favourite foreign venue…

“The Deaf Institute in Manchester. It’s got this weird, birdcage-type stage that looks beautiful.”

We’re surprisingly popular in…

“Santa Ana, California. We’d never played there before, and the response was amazing. It’s funny, on the tour we’re on right now, with Temples, the places I assume no one is gonna know us have turned out to be the best ones.”

Best or worst exotic foodstuff…

“Best and worst would be meat ‘n’ chips in the UK. We had that for dinner a disgusting amount of times.”

Most interesting individual you've met on the road…

“I got to meet Paul Westerberg at Coachella after The Replacements’ set. He’s a bit of a hero of mine, so that was pretty good.”

Worst on-tour injury, or infection, or accident…

“I dropped Jack’s (Ridley, lead guitar) dumbbell on Joe’s foot once. That's about the extent of it. Oh, and Josh (Hubbard), from Skaters, got the flu on our tour with them and one by one we were struck down by it. I think that’s the longest I’ve been off booze since the band started.”

My essential travel item…

“Sunglasses. The morning sun through the van windows can be hell on a hangover.”

My essential travel tip...

“Don't pack anything except underwear, socks and a toothbrush. We basically wear the same clothes every day when we’re at home, so why change it for tour?”
