CLASH and Pioneer DJ have partnered up to document the rise of our favourite homegrown DJs, through a series of curated shorts titled, ‘For The Love Of It’. Previously we interviewed Nico, now we invite club scene mainstay DJ Cueball to the studio to showcase his infectious club edits, making his debut on the DDJ-REV7 DJ controller, VM-50 monitors and HDJ-CX headphones.
The past 8 years have seen DJ Cueball transition from a nascent local DJ to an international festival favourite. Racking up residencies around the globe, Cueball’s passion for the art-form has propelled him to new heights: he’s shared the stage and supported the likes of Ty Dolla $ign, Akon and afro-swing revolutionary J Hus; outside of club settings, the turntablist takes to the airwaves of BBC 1Xtra and Capital Xtra on soundtracking duties.
Cueball’s sets are gleefully referential, paying homage to OG progenitors, reworking classic R&B and rap tropes into modernist mixes for a new generation. Well-versed in the high-end club circuit, with slots at Reign, Tabu and Cirque Le Soir, Cueball has mastered the art of producing aerodynamic sets with eccentric cuts that keeps the club goer engaged and energised.
In conversation, DJ Cueball reflects on the evolution of mixing equipment, his creative process, finding the right balance between the oldskool and contemporary voices in hip-hop and the words of wisdom he’d impart to those exploring the art form.
