Finn Peters

Matthew Herbert's Ones To Watch

“Finn Peters has put together a band of incredibly persuasive and egalitarian players, who’ve emerged out of the London jazz scene and then for a long time now they’ve been quietly going about their business, learning how to play with each other as a group and as an ensemble.

I have huge respect for that, particularly because these days it’s so easy to string a few records together and become a DJ and end up on the front cover of magazines and get flown around the world and get paid a great deal of money just to mix two records into each other, which I think has a place, but it certainly shouldn’t be at the expense of people who are learning the craft of performing and playing music together.

And particularly when it comes to things like improvisation, because you need the love and support of the musicians around you to keep that united and not spiral off into separate exploration. So I think Finn manages to pull that atmosphere together in somewhere that’s very healthy and musically challenging, and at times incredibly beautiful.”
