Exploring Ragz Originale’s Sonic Roots

As he prepares to release his new EP...

Ragz Originale has worked with some of the biggest names around.

A producer whose credits include Skepta and FKA twigs, his unrelenting creativity is matched to a lucid emotional touch.

New EP 'txt ur x' finds Ragz returning to solo duties, and he applies that exacting studio touch to some of his most personal material yet.

Out this week, it's stylistically diverse, with the London artist moving from R&B bumpers through to club-focussed electronics.

Clash caught up with Ragz Originale to find out which sonic elements caught his ear during those sessions…

Lapalux – 'Don't Mean A Thing'

This is one of my favourite songs ever. I'm so jealous of this song, I really wish I made it.

I worked with Lapalux in the studio last year and told him to his face, 'This is me man’.

Laura Groves – 'Mystique'

A lot of people don't know this but this is the most inspirational artist I've ever met and do I dare say it, my favourite artist – yep.

All the progressive harmonies I create throughout my music are inspired by how this lady uses hers… I am nothing without Laura.

Toro Y Moi – 'Say That'

Toro is just so cool man, isn't he? A modern day hero. I first heard this song live on Jimmy Fallon and thought whaaaaaaat?! He helped me be more carefree in terms of how I dress and present myself to the universe.

Jamie xx – 'Girl'

This song birthed my whole futuristic sound… Hearing this for the first time inspired to be more daring with my creations. I made 'En Route' shortly after this, fearless sounds only. I don't care if you don't get it yet… you will soon!

Blood Orange – 'Chamakay'

I came across this song like five years ago and had no clue how to feel about it. I couldn't get over how carefree he was dancing in the video… This was before I fell in love with the song.

I love that I had to dive in to his world to understand him, I'm still studying on how to improve on this for myself daily.
