"Excitement Brings Hope To The Future" Miyavi Interviewed

J-Pop star on his Netflix role, and using social media to bring people together...

With an album, a new role in Netflix film Kate and more, there is no dearth of newness and the challenges that accompany it for the veteran Japanese musician Miyavi. However the fine balance between a passion to keep doing what he’s been for over two decades and his appreciation of new challenges forms the basis of this multi-talented Japanese artist’s career.

Showcasing a constantly evolving artistry that has seen him embrace mediums like TikTok and NFT with open-minded creativity, Mivayi says: “It’s always challenging. But I like a challenge. That’s a pleasure in life for a human being to be challenged by new stuff. I appreciate it.”

Besides weaving it into his career, social media like TikTok has helped him connect with his children. Revealing that after having made his mark in multiple creative fields including music, acting and fashion, dance is what he’d love to foray into next, he also adds: “My family and I made a little buzz on TikTok during the pandemic. Being at home, I was able to connect with my kids through TikTok. Dancing at home brings people together, and I give credit to these social media platforms for entertaining us.”

His willingness to learn new things is not just limited to realm of social media, but to what he takes away from fellow collaborators. Speaking of his new album ‘Imaginary’- featuring the likes of Kimbra, Kang Daniel, Troi Irons, he explains: “Each of them has a different style, which works well, as today’s generation isn’t so much interested in music genres.”

Describing what he learned from each person on the album he adds: “Kang Daniel brings both vulnerability and really fresh element to the track, while Troi adds a relatable element to the track with her vocals. The way Kimbra portrays herself is really artistic and musical. Her approach on the track Imaginary is more futuristic, much more like a cyborg female is the vision we went with as it’s really interesting to hear her colourful voice. Kimbra is like a window into the future.”

While on the topic of the future, Miyavi whose music lends excitement for the future speaks of the message he hopes his listeners would take away, saying: “I believe that excitement brings hope to the future. That’s the moment you feel the future. The 'wow' moment.”

Having turned 40 in September, the reflections for the future then turn toward himself. First harkening to the past he tells his younger self: “Do more, work harder, and you will receive more. Study everything but make sure you have time for yourself,” giving a piece of advice we could all do with hearing once in a while.

Then looking to the future, he adds: “I see myself in 10 years being the same. If I am still playing guitar, acting, or doing fashion. I’m sure I’ll live to the fullest every day as long as I’m living and doing my best. There are no regrets in life.”

An artist who has developed himself to become the epitome of timelessness, Miyavi who has slowly and steadily broken out of the confines of his J-pop singer-songwriter tag, will never go out of style as he wraps listeners up in notes drenched with imagination, anticipation and hope.
