Everything Everything Review The Singles

From Pulled Apart By Horses to Snoop Dogg...

Critics often dwell on the more cerebral moments in Everything Everything's music.

It's true, the Manchester group embark on twists and turns that few other bands would even contemplate. At heart, though, these are pop songs: furiously inventive, continually innovative pop songs, but pop songs, nonetheless.

New single 'Regret' emerges on June 15th via RCA, with upcoming album 'Get To Heaven' arriving on the same day.

To celebrate, Clash unleashed Everything Everything on this week's single releases.

Pulled Apart By Horses – 'Grim Deal'

I read that Pulled Apart By Horses chose their name because they wanted to people to think they were a crap metal band. That seems like a pretty good attitude to have and this video runs with it. Amongst the pleasingly shonky hologram skulls and pot plants there's a really enjoyable, solid song though.

'Grim Deal' – while displaying influences such as Nirvana, At The Drive-In and The Jesus Lizard – manages to be its own thing and it's all the better for its strangeness.

M.O. – 'Preach'

Their modus operandi is very clearly THE NINETIES but Preach is a good enough song to escape total pastiche, and the production is right up to date on the whole. It's nothing ground-breaking but for someone with a soft spot for TLC/En Vogue/Destiny's Child – as we do – its double-denim, frothy catchiness is quite charming.

Lion Babe – 'Wonder Woman'

Lion Babe's voice and general presentation is very much like a cross between Beyoncé and Erykah Badu, which is no bad thing. Pharrell's production has a great lightness of touch which gives a decent song some shimmer and grooviness.

Rae Morris – 'Love Again'

We had the pleasure of remixing this song recently. It has some lovely moments and it's great to see Rae starting to get the attention she deserves. She has an impeccable voice and 'Love Again' showcases it very nicely.

Snoop Dogg – 'Peaches N Cream'

I'm sure at this point in his career Snoop isn't too concerned with 'jumping the shark'. There are plenty of other things in this video for him to jump over though, such as the Beats By Dre docking station or the planet-sized CGI peach which flies towards the screen right after the line "damn, her ass is so big".

It goes without saying that Snoop's already done so much great work that his place in the rap Hall Of Fame is fully secure but maybe it's time for him to move on from the whole '1970s amiable pimp' schtick now…
