MOVE ON

This is old news, with the details tweaked. I did a little ‘woop’ when I first heard Shaun’s trumpet (he sent it over from Canada). It was always supposed to be happy and sad and the same time, like the rest of the record. Maybe more so.

I NEED YOUR MIND

The first few lines started life as an exercise in sincerity. The whole thing is a bundle of mixed messages really, but it’s a banger.

BIRD ON THE WING

We had a nice time recording the whole album, but I remember all of this being particularly enjoyable. One of the best things about recording music is knowing that when you’re very old you’ll be able to listen back and remember exactly how you felt at certain points, without having to ask a nurse.

THE OLD DAYS

I started this while I was still in my last band, but it seemed a bit too close to the bone then. Now I feel like it walks a narrow line between comedy and tragedy. It’s a game of two halves and I think they complement each other really well. I always feel like a druid when we sing the end bit.

INJURED PARTY

I don’t like people being unpleasant to each other and I do like dead simple songs in D.

GIVING IT ALL AWAY

I like how the other guys all sound like Yo La Tengo on this. We played a hardcore version of it at rehearsal the other night, singing it a bit like Ian Mackaye and so on. It was a real revelation…

RED CARPET

Sometimes writing a song can save you the trouble of sitting down to try and write a book, or even a short story. I have ‘If Nobody Speaks Of Remarkable Things’ by Jon McGregor in my head when I sing this. Melinda’s drums took this somewhere really odd as soon as we started working on it.

SIT AND WAIT

We do enjoy singing together. We had a great version of it worked up that sounded like a 50s rock ‘n roller by Carl Mann or something, but it didn’t suit the subject matter. I like that it sounds really serious.

SPIT IN THE SEA

This is about time wasting, a subject I return to when I should be doing something more productive. We had a lot of fun working out how to keep it this simple.

ELISABETH FRINK

Probably the only time I’ll ever use lyrics I started writing on acid as a teenager to make abstract points about reincarnation and socialism. While we were recording it I kept thinking we were recording the theme tune to an early 60s science fiction series, but I couldn’t tell you why. Matt’s guitar sound?

MARRIED WOMAN

This was a joy to make, and I’m really happy with what we did with it. Michael wanted to re-record the piano, because it was never intended to be the dominant instrument, but we locked him in a cupboard.
