Dj Mix Podcast Series – Luke Slater

A true master of the scene

A techno masterclass is what we’re offering in this week’s exclusive DJ mix, from a pioneer of a producer, DJ and remixer whose electronic output still sounds as fresh today as it did when he began releasing in the early nineties – Luke Slater.

After beginning to DJ in the initial phases of the acid house scene – an influence which still permeates some of his music – Slater began his recording career at Jelly Jam Records in Brighton, before going on to release a wide range of experimental techno on a variety of labels, including Novamute (which spawned the renowned albums ‘Freek Funk’ and ‘Wireless’) and Peacefrog, where he began using his (now widely recognised) Planetary Assault Systems moniker to release his harder-edged output.

A track from the Planetary Assault Systems alias – taken from the ‘Temporary Suspension’ album released earlier this year on Berlin label Ostgut Ton –also finishes up Slater’s exclusive Clash mix in glorious uncompromising fashion. The mix itself is a typically experimental affair – exploring everything from stripped-back minimal sounds to jittery synth-lines to rushes of harder beats – but one which never lets up from its techno paradigm, presented with true Slater flair.

Slater also pays homage to his many and varied electronic roots and influences, with a nod to the seminal Detroit scene and some of its key players via back-to-back tracks from Robert Hood and Jeff Mills. These blend into the sounds of contemporary techno from those who are continuing to evolve the genre, such as France’s Terrence Fixmer and James Ruskin.

Slater’s mix is, quite simply, techno heaven, purveyed by a true master of the scene.
