Something a little different this week, as we present an exclusive live set from the eight-legged live electronic outfit that is 2020Soundsystem. Recorded during their recent US tour, the set was taken from their performance at renowned New York club Studio B towards the end of last year.
Started by hugely influential DJ and producer Ralph Lawson and drummer Danny Ward (who’s played with the likes of AIM, Filia Brazilia and The Pharcyde), 2020Soundsystem are a live band who mix Lawson’s expertly crafted electronics with live drums, bass, keys and vocals. The result is a heady combination of numerous house and techno flavours melded with tight, live funk and precision percussion.
The Studio B performance is a mix of the band’s own material, taken from previous releases and upcoming second album ‘Falling’, and live interpretations of choice tracks from other artists, including 20:20 Vision labelmates such as Bobby Peru and The Youngsters.
In their live sets, the band manage to find the perfect mix of the well-crafted track and the experimental jam, with each track flowing seamlessly into the next, adding to the sense that what you’re hearing is very much a live experience from musicians at the top of their game. As a result of this, 2020Soundsystem have already established themselves as a formidable live act. Listening to their Studio B performance, it’s not hard to see why.
