DJ Marky

Innerground label head honcho

The minisphere of Brazilian drum and bass grooms its tail feathers with a label of guru status sharing a fiftieth release with a world now firmly aware of the scene’s vim.

DJ Marky, Innerground label head honcho, hadn’t actually put out a solo creation until this half-century milestone so the obvious enquiry is why has it taken forty-nine to do so? “To be honest I couldn't tell you why I haven’t released a solo track so far. I have been privileged enough to know and work alongside so many talented producers and engineers that I guess my own stuff just got left behind,” he admits. “I was making things, but there was always another project to finish or tour to do so I just ended up with a hard drive full of half-finished tracks.”

‘Ya Thang/You Know’ (INN050) is, obviously, of a similar ilk to the liquid D&B genre in which the brand has snuggled itself into over the years; pinching glimpses from old school vinyl and transforming them into 160BPM soul-jerkers with enviable precision.

In musical years, it may seem like a Stone Age since Marky, or Marky Mark as he was first known, first came to the attention of British DJ, Bryan Gee, back in 1998. Over a decade on, heads are still bopping as hard as Churchill’s to the rhythm, and long may it live on.
