DJ Disasters: Sei A

When it all goes wrong...

Every DJ has one.

A night when everything that can possibly go wrong does – and it does so in spectacular fashion. ClashMusic brings you DJ Disasters, featuring some of the most respected figures in the dance world reminiscing about those moments when it all went badly wrong.

Originally from Glasgow, Sei A has built his reputation around forward thinking techno cuts and a deft live show. A dexterous mixture of technology and a dancefloor nous, the Turbo signed producer has been tearing up clubs around the globe for some time now.

However everyone has an off night. With more and more DJs depending on ever more complex technology, something has to give…

I’ve gone for close to 4 years without one crash and I’ve been careful with the setup to make sure everything will go glitch free. I run 2 laptops, one running loops, drums from Ableton and the other processing vocals, synths and added fx. My last gig in Budapest however finally brought to the stage – the epic computer fail/crash moment. Although not just on one of my laptops but both of them. Having a silent club for around 5 mins (which feels like an eternity) in the midst of the set going off is one sweaty, slightly frightening moment for sure.

After the DJ beside me comes back to move some of their equipment while I was playing. Them hitting my sound-cards firewire cable, then pauses Ableton, thereafter crashes the software, a restart is order bearing in mind this laptop being over 5 years old – takes an effin’ long time to restart.

This alone was bad enough but I thought I’d try and cover up the mishap with bringing live vocals on the other laptop with verbs and delay to cover the fault. Once I began to create a crescendo of mangled loop vocals to an eagerly attentive crowd the software crashes. Silence, again. 2 laptops down. Boo’s and jeers ring out but after a very trusting promoter willing on my rescue, I get back into the groove. Never trust the machines entirely and always have a pint of strong Hungarian beer by your side…
