Talking football and veganism with the duo...

Rodrigo y Gabriela started at the bottom and worked their way to the top.

Starting as buskers performing in the street, the guitar duo have sold over 1.5 million records over 20 years, performed for President Obama at the White House State Dinner (with Beyonce), and they've sold out enormous venues across the globe.

Returning with new album ‘Mettavolution’ later this month, the pair push themselves in fresh areas, matching outstanding technical ability to an interest in science, theology and more.

Clash sat down with Rodrigo Sanchez to discuss a few key touchstones for Culture Clash.

Sapiens: A Brief History Of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari is a fascinating read, which I would recommend to anyone with an interest in how our species has changed the world in the course of human evolution.

The book was an influence on our new album ‘Mettavolution’, I think we are still evolving as a species. I like books on Buddhism, mindfulness, neurology and the human condition, I don’t read much fiction.

ROMA - it was a delight to see a beautiful piece of contemporary Mexican art so widely celebrated all over the world. I’m a fan of parkour, and the great outdoors, so a documentary like ‘Meru’, about mountain climbing in India, would hold my attention.

I also enjoyed Mission Control: The Unsung Heroes Of Apollo about the scientists at NASA back in the 60s.

I’ve been down a bit of a 90s grunge rabbit hole recently. 'Badmotorfinger' by Soundgarden, 'Hunger Strike' by Temple Of The Dog and Mother Love Bone. Apparently there is a new Tool album coming soon, I’m looking forward to hearing that.

As a vegan, I was pleased to see Veganuary make a wider impression around the world at the beginning of the year. I also heartened by initiatives like Meatless Monday and Ditch Diary, which encourage people to reflect on and maybe change their lifestyle choices.

I’m a big fan of FC Barcelona, and I’m thrilled to see them doing so well in La Liga this season. Happily we are playing some European shows in April around the ‘Mettavolution’ album launch, so I’m looking forward to watching them take on Manchester United in the Champions League.
