Culture Clash Extra – We Fell To Earth

Wendy Rae Fowler on her favourite things...

With their debut eponymous album in stores now, and a couple of well-received forays into the live arena behind them, the atmosphere-stirring duo of We Fell To Earth are looking ahead to further successes between now and the end of 2009.

The band – Brit Richard File, formerly of UNKLE, and US singer Wendy Rae Fowler, who has previously worked with the likes of Eagles of Death Metal and Queens of the Stone Age – has been described as “eerie and unforgettable” by the Guardian, “fabulously disorientating” by Mojo, and as “weird and wonderful” by Clash – you can read our online review HERE.

We Fell To Earth – ‘The Double’ (live)

Movie
The Station Agent. It’s a feel-good movie in an artful yet affecting kind of way, and you can’t help but fall in love with the three main characters, real people dealing with real life situations. If you read the outside of the box it may not seem very exciting, but it’s definitely a film that has something in it for everyone.

Book
Celebration by Harry Crews. It’s been a long time since I read this book, but it’s one of my favorites. Harry Crews, who’s from Georgia, is incredible. It’s pretty gross and twisted in a down to earth (down under the earth might be a bit more like it) sort of way. The main characters are called Stump and his lovely lady Too Much… interested now? This is one book I would NOT recommend giving your mom for Christmas!

Album
’Funhouse’ by The Stooges. There is no way humanly possible that written words could justify the divine power of this record… that’s right, that’s what I said. If you’ve heard it, you know what I mean. If you haven’t, whoah! This thing is gonna take your head off the way music should! I’m excited for you! Now go get it, youngsters! Run! Run like the wind!

Track
‘Fascinator’ by HTRK. Sad, druggy, and dreamy; simple, sexy, and classy… LUCIOUS. This band, this song in particular, quenches my never-ending thirst for deep, dark sounds in every way. The instrumentation, the vocals, the lyrics… I love it all. Listen to this and tell me you’re not in love with this band (their singer in particular) and I’ll call you a liar!

TV show / series
Eastbound and Down (HBO). For those of you who always wanted to know what a true ‘redneck’ is really like, check out this new HBO comedy. The lead character, Kenny Powers, is an incredibly vulgar failed baseball star/redneck/pompous asshole who actually does and says all the things you and I only dream about saying aloud. Sadly, the second series isn’t due until 2010.

Exhibition
Banksy in Bristol. This guy has a lot to say that’s well worth listening to, and there’s nothing stopping him. He does it in a way that is digestible for people of all ages to understand and appreciate. This viewing took me on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. I left feeling pretty honoured and grateful that that I’d had the opportunity to see these works. I’ve seen lots of amazing art, but I don’t remember ever leaving any exhibition with that particular feeling.

Holiday destination
Spain. I haven’t been there, but would like to go.

Gig venue
So far, any venue in Germany. People LOVE music there. They’re so warm and friendly and enthusiastic… every venue I played there seemed magical.

Live band / DJ
The first thing that comes to mind is The Knife. Although technically I wasn’t there, I’ve seen a DVD of a live performance recently. I normally prefer seeing live music played by a stage full of people but this show, with only two people on stage, was absolutely captivating. The visuals combined with the music moved me in way that I rarely experience – something I certainly hadn’t expected from an entirely electronic act. I can’t imagine how awe-inspiring it must have been to have actually physically been present for this one.
