Culture Clash Extra: We Are The Physics

Glasgow 'mutant science punks' talk movies and more

Born in Glasgow in 2005, We Are The Physics’ Devo- and Polysics-echoing take on itchy and insistent indie-pop draws upon new wave influences to seem ever so unique in 2008.

The band – Michael M (vocals, bass) Michaelguitar (guitar, vocals), Michaeldrum (drums, vocals) and, erm, Chris (guitar, vocals) – released their debut album, ‘We Are The Physics Are OK At Music’, via This Is Fake DIY in May. Its release saw some critical sorts label the group ‘Mutant Science Punk Rock’.

Sounds mad-decent to us. Michael M fills us in on his cultural faves outside of pumping his own music into the ears of the many…

Movie

A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge. It tells a tender tale about teenage homosexuality personified as burnt-faced dream murderer Freddy Krueger. There will never be a better film, surely.

Book

‘Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?’. No matter when you read it (provided you can block out Harrison Ford from your brain), it always seems to resonate with the times. The way it deals with paranoia and perception of other people/races is always relevant. Although, I don’t personally know any androids at the moment, much to my dismay.

Album

Still listening to ‘Curses’ by Future Of The Left, but ‘Sing To God’ by Cardiacs is always a pleasure.

Track

‘Parrot’ by The Victorian English Gentleman’s Club. What a beast of a track! It’s like getting battered in the face by pointy shoes.

Television show or series

I’ve been watching Fist Of Fun from that dark period of history, the 1990s. It’s still fresh and hilarious today, unlike TFI Friday.

Exhibition

Kylie Minoise did one-on-one exhibitions in Glasgow recently, where he filmed himself performing for one person and they could take the recording away with them as a souvenir. Fear would be shat.

Holiday destination

Moscow. It’s terrifying and amazing simultaneously, like Chris Tarrant.

Gig venue

The 13th Note in Glasgow. It’s a wee, red box room where only the three people at the front can see the band. The room itself sweats and it always plays host to some of the most exciting bands about at the moment, which is why we never get to play there.

Live band or DJ

Lovvers were amazing last time I saw them, and so were Untitled Musical

Project. Take A Worm For A Walk Week are also frighteningly good. I don’t know any DJs, unfortunately. Does DJ From TV sitcom Roseanne count?
