Culture Clash: CROOX

What they do in their spare time...

CROOX like to remain in the shadows.

But with the success of 2015's introductory EP 'EU', it's doubtful if they'll remain that way for long. New single 'Crying' arrives on January 29th, and it's a stylish, impeccably pieced together heartbreak hymnal.

A suitable soundtrack for those January blues, 'Crying' could mark the point where CROOX are flushed out into the open.

Frontman Howard agreed to talk to Clash – about everything apart from the music…

Book
I hate to say it but I haven’t read a book in years. I put this down to either just not having the time to really put my attention into it or getting distracted by the world of technology and music. I used to read on the plane, now I just catch up on what albums I have missed. Any recommendations though would not go a miss.

Gadget
Our keyboard player Darren has diabetes and is constantly plugged in to an insulin pump. This means instead of injecting himself with insulin like a lot of diabetics do, he can control his insulin intake just with the click of a button. Pretty cool, right? He is basically a robot. Hands down my favourite gadget.

Video Game
I would have to say FIFA, purely for the social aspect of it. I have loved the game ever since I was a kid, playing against my Dad and him getting pissed off because I would always pretend I was the commentator. France 98 was probably the best FIFA ever made, soundtracked by Blur’s ‘Song 2’ and the only game that had a five a side, indoor pitch! My favourite thing about the game is how terrible our drummer Al is at it. He gets really down about it and we have all tried to help him out, but he is just a lost cause.

TV Show
For me, Entourage is the greatest show of all time, with eight series of pure trashy goodness. However Entourage would be nothing without probably the greatest TV character of all time, Ari Gold. It’s the kind of series that if you watch it too much you start feeling like you are actually in the show. When you walk down the streets with your mates you feel like you should have some sort of theme tune. Maybe that’s just me?

Film
I am not the biggest film buff, while my mates are talking about how great some director is or how talented some new actor is, I’m at home watching Despicable Me. However in fear of sounding like an eight year old, my favourite film would have to be Gladiator. I remember seeing it for the first time and immediately buying it on VHS to watch it on repeat.

Album
My favourite album has to be Stevie Wonder’s ‘Songs In The Key Of Life’. An absolute masterpiece, that for me will never get old and never be topped. Second to that is probably Frank Ocean’s ‘channel ORANGE’. The man is a legend and has inspired so many of my melodies and his songwriting is just inspiring. Will he ever release another album? Come on, Frank… sort it out mate!
