Badly Drawn Boy ‘In Safe Hands’ (BDB Records)
The Mercury Award-winning Damon Gough returns with his most mature and accomplished album to date. Earnest and mournful, this is the opening track from the latest record ‘It’s What I’m Thinking’ and boasts stripped-back acoustic instrumentation and delicate but resonant vocals.
Rumer ‘Long Long Day ’ (Atlantic Records)
A cover of Paul Simon’s ‘Long, Long Day’, his classic guitar tone has been subbed for some brass instrumentation and a formal vibe. Play this soulful jazz track at a dinner party and you’re bound to subdue the neighbours. Even Jools Holland and Burt Bacharach are fans.
Carl Barat ‘She’s Something’ (Integral)
The Libertines guitarist has been experiencing a renaissance in recent months and his highly anticipated solo album is just one of his various projects. Upfront and emotional, this guitar-based ode to a lover shows the singer in a new light as he bares his soul.
Sky Larkin ‘Kaleide’ (Wichita Recordings)
A demo version of their second album’s title track, it is clear that Sky Larkin have delivered once again, even with a rough recording such as this. Fans of ‘The Golden Spike’ will be pleased to hear that ‘Kaleide’ is not too far removed from the band’s debut.
The Heartbreaks ‘I Didn’t Think It Would Hurt To Think Of You’(Label Fandango)
Following on from the band’s first hit single ‘Liar, My Dear’ is ‘I Didn’t Think It Would Hurt To Think Of You’. The track’s title may be a mouthful but the song is a bite-sized chunk of uplifting indie that recalls the very best of Manchester’s musical heritage.
FOPS ‘Solid Copper Huntress’ (Monotreme)
Inspired by futuristic ’80s pop, this duo’s first LP ‘Yeth Yeth Yeth’ considers both the past and future of a central character. The timing of album track ‘Solid Copper Huntress’ is unaccountable, but it’s good to hear this sort of thing getting spun.
Teebs ‘Arthur’s Birds’ (Brainfeeder)
Flying Lotus has compared Teebs’ music to “the way Avatar looks” and we couldn’t have put it better ourselves. There’s definitely an otherworldly presence to the Los Angeles musician’s beats. ‘Arthur’s Birds’ is the first single to be taken from eagerly anticipated debut album ‘Ardour’.
Disclosure ‘Offline Dexterity’ (Moshi Moshi)
Moshi Moshi enter the futuristic world of dubstep with this release from the Disclosure brothers. The soulful female vocals of and surges of fluid electronica on the track add depth, while the bubbling two-step ditty is reminiscent of a long-lost ’90s club anthem.
Detachments ‘Holiday Romance’ (This Is Not An Exit)
If Lady Gaga and Trent Reznor enjoyed a brief holiday romance trawling the insalubrious basement dives of Berlin, this may just be their soundtrack. Dark, brooding and with enough ’80s synths to wave a Depeche Mode-sized stick at, prepare yourself for another industrial revolution.
Permanent Vacation ‘Zucker Hut’ (Permanent Vacation)
‘Zucker Hut’ is a recent production by Permanent Vacation label heads Tom Bioly and Benjamin Fröhlich. The track boasts beats aplenty from various percussion, haunting strings and a rather large horn sound. Respectably progressive and as sweet as the sugar cube it may be named after.
