This month has songs from Beth Jeans Houghton, Alt J, Catherine AD, Illum Sphere, Lady Leshurr, Rough Fields, Stealing Sheep, Weird Dreams and Two Inch Punch.

ALT-J ‘Tessalate’ (LOUD AND QUIET)

Up close, personal and striking out from the quiet shore where we last saw The Beta Band and Gomez alive, these University friends appear to have channelled most of their talents into their band rather than their dusty scrolls.

BETH JEANS HOUGHTON ‘Dodecahedron’ (MUTE)

Shape shifting in positive directions, BJH has us bolting out the stable door faster than you can say ‘The Hooves of Destiny’, who in fact comprise her band that here ferry Beth’s arresting tones skywards to a captivating new chapter in her life.

WEIRD DREAMS ‘Joan’ (TOUGH LOVE)

Ponderingly psychedelic in a quintessentially English way, Weird Dreams sound just as they should. Pining, winsome and as proper as your aunt. This new band have reams of ground to travel as ‘Joan’ gently displays. Time for a lie-in.

LADY LESHURR ‘Lego’ (Acoustic)

Brace this year for the female MCs taking centre stage. Here Birmingham’s fastest rhyme-smith strips back the grime and bass to dazzle us with a complete showcase of her incredible lyrical flips. You can see this nailing Jools.

ILLUM SPHERE ‘Ko-otz’ (UNRELEASED)

Dark lumbering bass nebulae is Ryan Hunn’s forte. Operating at a point where you’d expect to find Harmonic 313 chatting to Dabrye about the sad lack of decent Turkish psych recently, Illum Sphere aptly fills a necessary and unique spot.

TWO INCH PUNCH ‘We Were The One’ (PMR)

Fragmental R&B, vapourised soul and disassociated beats collide. This could score everything from a film to a bus journey with equal widescreen appeal. James Blake’s influence has unleashed a beast that may now run him out of his own manor.

STEALING SHEEP ‘Paper Moon’ (HEAVENLY)

Rustling up psych, weird ass folk and the intensity of a séance, Stealing Sheep haven’t wasted time is hurling together a Trojan horse of fragile sounds. Don’t be fooled, they’ll rob your heart for their nefarious purposes in no time.

CATHERINE A.D. ‘Missiveh’ (OUTSIDERHOOD)

Taking classically trained sounds to keep things angled tight to quality Catherine A.D. wove her spell on us this summer – and we’ve been unable to break free since. It rarely gets purer than ‘Missiveh’, a gentle strum into the depths of a true voice.

ROUGH FIELDS ‘The Harbour Wall’ (BOMB SHOP)

Rough Fields is the sound that James Birchall’s brain makes when he seriously thinks. Now teaming up with Bonobo’s epic backing band, expect his compositions to travel miles over his own metaphorical stone walls. Truly great fresh ideas from our modest man ooop norf.
