There are few figures within the rave scene that have managed to command both the underground and mainstream like Bristol’s CLIPZ has. As Redlight, Hugh Pescod traversed the dance continuum from the early 2010s, but under his CLIPZ moniker, his junglist ambitions, affinity for sound system vibrations and lean, burly basslines made him the definitive party starter on the DJ circuit.
Since 2019, CLIPZ has revived the communal energy in his solo experiments but also in his production work with other artists. Fresh off producing Finn Foxell’s ‘TYSON’, and more recently co-creating with Nia Archives on her anthemic cut ‘Bad Gyalz’, CLIPZ enlists KAM-BU, Tia Carys and Lady Ice for new single ‘I LIKE’, featuring brash, scabrous wordplay over airy bass breaks.
The whiplash-inducing accompanying video brings forth the mischief and mayhem associated with Carnival. Ahead of the weekender – a foundational pillar in British Caribbean culture – CLIPZ raids the archives for five essential picks to get us in the mood.
—
Koffee – ‘Toast‘
Come on! It doesn’t come more modern classic than Koffee – ‘Toast’! This one is sure to do the rounds on sound systems over carnival weekend.
—
SHY FX – ‘Original Nutter‘
It wouldn’t be a carnival without a SHY FX rhythm hitting you in the chest. His sets never miss and always cause roadblock when he plays!
—
Sister Nancy – ‘Bam Bam‘
This one is an original carnival sound from the legendary Jamaican singer and DJ, Sister Nancy. As one of the first female DJs in dancehall Nancy is a key figure for her involvement in sound system culture.
—
Sticky ft. Ms Dynamite – ‘Boo!‘
‘Boo!’ is forged in people’s brains as the ultimate classic, it will always be the carnival fire starter!
—
Chase & Status, Bou ft. ft. IRAH, Flowdan, Trigga and Takura – ‘Baddadan’
This one has been everywhere, an absolute anthem that you can’t miss! Could this one come in as a 2023 contender on the jungle rigs? I’m thinking yes!
