A very special ‘Summertime mix’
ClashMusic DJ Mix Podcast - Justin Martin

A very special ‘Summertime mix’ this week, from San Franciscan producer and Dirtybird Records luminary Justin Martin, which means plenty of sun-drenched leftfield house, glittery funk, nostalgic electro and infectious booty bass.

It’s a blissful, quirky and intoxicating package – crammed full of intriguing edits by Martin, who has clearly put a lot of thought into weaving this one together – but, we hear you cry, why no tracklist? Why the shrouded secrecy? Fear not, it’s all part of the gameplan, as the man himself explains:

“I would rather have people listen to it and discussing it. I know how it goes with this type of thing, because I’m as guilty as the next person of judging a mix by the tracklist, but when I see a new mix by someone like Maceo Plex and there’s no tracklist attached, I am more inclined to listen to it from start to finish. It also drives me crazy not knowing what the tracks are, but it makes me talk about it that much more. I think it… makes the mix less disposable.”

So there you go. Listen, absorb, discuss and track down those elusive edits.

In keeping with the wishes of Mr Martin, we won’t give too much away, lest to say that a hazy cover of a Hall & Oates song later sampled by De La Soul raises a smile, and is just one of the highlights of this unique mix.

Justin Martin’s ‘Ghettos and Gardens’ is out now on Dirtybird.
