Disco? It’s all about flares, cheesy funk and mirror balls, right? Err, no, actually, as you’ll hear when The Emperor Machine shoves you down probably the freakiest, raviest, acid-drenched disco K-hole you’ll ever come across in the latest exclusive Clash DJ mix.
The Emperor Machine (aka Andy Meecham) has been tearing disco a new one for some time now, using the genre as a platform to explore all things wonky. These tripped-out tendencies are no doubt partly rooted in Meecham’s time with early-’90s rave-leaning crew Bizarre Inc and experimental disco-housers Chicken Lips, fully explored in his four full-length albums as Emperor Machine, including 2014’s ‘Like a Machine’. Meecham has also been called on by some big names to add a dose of dubbed-out disco weirdness to their tracks, including Daft Punk, Royksopp and Moby.
It seems futile to try and encapsulate The Emperor Machine’s fizzing beast of a Clash mix in a few sentences, suffice to say anyone who’s ever dug the sound of a vintage synth or an 808 will probably find a lot to love in its 90 wonderful minutes. Finally, here’s a few words from Meecham to set you up for the ride.
“It’s almost the end of the year, so I thought it would be nice to include some unreleased Emperor Machine tracks and a few previews of some EM remixes that will be out next year – plus a couple of unknown white label tracks that I love at the moment. Happy Christmas, folks.”
Listen to it now.
