Rising Los Angeles producer Sage Caswell rustles up an exclusive DJ mix for Clash teeming with wonky house and breathy techno, for the latest instalment of the series.
Recently nabbed by experimental Brooklyn trio Archie Pelago, who’ve just released his latest EP on their label, Caswell does a nice line in heady, softly psychedelic jams that go in heavy on the beats but sit easy on the ear. He often works with fellow LA producer Cromie, releasing on hip underground labels like Brooklyn-based Peach and Waze & Odysse's Street Tracks (Kyle Hall also put in a shimmering remix of the pair's track 'Vines'), but has recently been attracting attention for his forward-thinking solo tunes, too.
Caswell’s Clash mix treads lightly at first before settling comfortably into rolling rhythms and heads-down vibes. It’s interspersed with a few tripped-out moments, but by-and-large this is a classy basement beats set with plenty of attitude. We grabbed a few words from Caswell about his selection:
“This is the first proper mix I’ve done in a long while. I wanted to make something that would be ok to listen to before going out at night, that also reflects what you might hear me play at the club. I’ve included some tracks by my friends NYCPARTYINFO, Evan Jones, Project Pablo and Wolfey, all of whom are making really cool music that I’m super excited about. Other great tracks [are] from labels I like and artists I enjoy. Thanks for listening.”
