Yep, empanadas are where it’s at with this week’s mix. But don’t think that that means it’s filled with hastily mashed-together fillers – nothing could be further from the truth. The mix artist, Jono Ma, was simply touring with his band – psych-happy dance-pop outfit Jagwar Ma – out in Texas, at a little ol’ festival called South by Southwest.
It’s one of many dates the Australian band have been busying themselves with recently, having spent the best part of the last 12 months on the road, touring the globe. Unsurprising, really, when you consider the rave reviews that their, erm, rave-tinged dreamy indie debut album, ‘Howlin’’, received on release.
Aside from his Jagwar Ma-ing, Jono has also been making a name for himself as a DJ of late, spinning and remixing other people’s tunes (Angel Haze and Temples have received his remix treatment) alongside writing his own with the band. It’s this DJ-focused avenue that Jono takes us down, with a mix that showcases his love for the dreamier side of dance music alongside some tougher textures. Expect a sky-gazing, beat-feasting trip that explores Balearic disco, cosmic house, rolling electronic funk, jittery jungle and plenty more. Joy Orbison, Tessela, Michael Mayer and Luciano all feature in Jono’s selection. Here’s Mr Ma himself with a few choice words on the mix.
“This mix is definitely a bit tougher than all the other mixes I’ve done. It’s also less eclectic and more ravey. Seemed a nice contract to the bleak Texan landscape.”
