Icelandic group deliver unexpected selection...
FM Belfast

This week’s Clash DJ mix slams pop, R&B, synth-pop, hip hop, Balearic bounce and much more into a blender, courtesy of Icelandic outfit FM Belfast.

The band’s shimmering-yet-sunny electro-pop tones have been raising smiles and soothing ears since their 2008 debut album, ‘How to Make Friends’. Combining the rich, melodic sensibilities of Icelandic contemporaries such as múm with bouncy beats and nostalgic synth riffs, the group’s enduring sense of humour frequently bubbles up to the surface of their music, ensuring a very human quality remains amongst the electronics.

Featured artists in FMB’s Clash mix include Kelis (reworked by FlyLo), Berlin rave upstarts Modeselektor, Norse disco don Todd Terje – turning in a batshit crazy acid remix of 1979 classic ‘Pop Muzik’ – and some melting Icelandic melodies from enigmatic songwriter Páll Ivan.

Just as the band’s warm sound is impossible to resist, so too is their Clash mix, essentially brainstormed by two band members, Ívar Pétur and Lóa Hjálmtýsdóttir, as Pétur himself explains:

“When asked to do this mix I immediately wrote everyone in the band to send me songs that they wanted to include. No-one replied except Lóa and I see now that it was a good thing. She threw a bunch of good songs my way and I couldn’t even include them all. She would probably make the best DJ in this band if she’d do it more often. So this mix is a mixture of Lóa’s songs mixed with some tracks that we have been DJing lately.

“Also, some songs from the FM Belfast family (Pluseinn’s ‘Zurich’ is a favourite). This is the second DJ mix in row that we make that ends with our friend Páll Ivan. I guess you could call him an anti-musician of sorts, a self-proclaimed hater of music, but endless source of beautiful melodies and ideas. We highly suggest cyber-travelling his way. Enjoy and we look forward seeing you this summer!”
