What did you have for breakfast this morning? Chances are it wasn’t as energising as the oatmeal and coffee that Vampire Weekend bassist Chris Baio chowed down on recently, as that particular combo allowed him to put together a selection of blissful and banging breakfast-based beats (which can, of course, be enjoyed at any time of the day or night) for the latest exclusive Clash DJ mix.
As proven over the last few years, BAIO doesn’t just play a mean bass guitar with his arty, experimental indie-rock pals. He’s also a dab hand when it comes to producing sun-blessed dancefloor grooves (such as on 2012’s ‘Sunburn Modern’ and upcoming release ‘On&On&On&On’) and laying down wholly satisfying DJ sets that demand movement and at least one hand in the air – usually both. Clearly, his time spent running a radio station, throwing basement parties and DJing at Colombia University before Vampire Weekend served him well.
BAIO’s mix for Clash is, quite simply, an irresistible 42 minutes. It’s a little bit electro-fried, a little bit banging, a little bit Balearic, a little bit spacey and 100% enjoyable. “I made this mix one morning last week while enjoying some coffee and oatmeal at my kitchen table. Some of these tracks bang, others are more chill, but I’ve been loving them all these past few weeks. I decided to start and end the mix with Joe Gibbs songs because I’ve been obsessively listening to his ‘Dub Serial’ record in these dying days of summer. I hope you enjoy it.”
