The soulful, funk-infused sounds of Melbourne are making waves here in the UK, and 30/70 Collective are at the forefront of this.
From the latest Brownswood compilation ‘Sunny Side Up’ – featuring three tracks from 30/70 members, Ziggy Zeitgeist, Horatio Luna and Allysha Joy – to the collective’s new ‘Fluid Motion’ LP out on Rhythm Section, they look set to shine.
The swirling, sun-soaked synths of album opener ‘Brunswick Hustle’ all the way through to the sax-laden shimmer of ‘Flowers’ at its close, the LP sets out 30/70’s stall, shifting between neo-soul and languid, Dilla-esque tendencies, astral-facing jazz textures and vignettes echoing UK club music history.
Here, 30/70 member Allysha Joy takes us through a primer of the new sounds coming out of her country. “This is a mix of my favourite (mostly) Melbourne sounds, textures and feels all created on this stolen land, Australia,” she says.
“With jazz as an undertone, it’s a taste of the different ways we’ve all interpreted inspirations from all over the world and combined them in a uniquely Melbourne way. Some old, some new, some unreleased treats!
Tune in now…
