Chromeo’s Last Day On Earth

Dave 1 shares his ideal last hours with Clash

If you were to die tomorrow, how would you spend your final day on Earth?

Going peacefully in his sleep this month is one half of electrofunk Canadian duo, Chromeo, David Macklovitch a.k.a. Dave 1.

Where do you wake up?
I would wake up in Montreal next to the studio where we record.

Who do you wake up next to?
I would wake up to next my girlfriend. I’ve been with her long enough to want to wake up next to her every day.

What would there be left to achieve on your last day?
I would go and record a bunch of stuff. I would just go and record every single idea that I have in my head and have Pat (Gemayel, bandmate) finish them, giving him very strict guidelines, which is what I do anyway. This is so we can have a couple of albums out after I’ve passed away, Tupac style.

Who do you have at your final dinner?
Pat, my little brother, my parents, A-Trak and my girl.

What are you going to eat?
I would have my mum cook. She’s Morroccan so it would be a Morroccan fish recipe.

What would you do that evening?
Well, I’m still finishing my dissertation, so I would revise my dissertation chapters and proof-read them, amend them in any way I can and leave notes so it can be published. I’m working on French Literature and my dissertation is on the pleasure of reading. After dinner I would go back to the studio and do some more recording because I would want to have as many songs and ideas as possible. They could play all the stuff I’ve recorded at my funeral.

What would be your greatest regret?
There are a few more books that I would like to read before I pass away. It depends on when I actually die, because we’re planning on doing more of this with the band, but another regret would be that I hadn’t done enough charity and community work.

What would be the last album that you’d listen to?
Michael Jackson – ‘Thriller’.

How are you going to die?
In my sleep, in the most peaceful way possible. And very, very well dressed, I’ve got to make sure I’m wearing a really good suit.

What would your final words be?
“Thank you.”

What song would you like play at your funeral?
I would have a whole playlist but ‘Playing Your Game’ by Barry White would be right up at the top. It’s one of my favourite songs ever.

What would you have written on your gravestone?
I’d have a quote from the French philosopher, Pascal. I know it in French so here’s a loose translation of it in English: “When he gets arrogant you bring him down. When he gets down on himself you bring him up and you always contradict him until he understands that he is himself an incomprehensible monster.” That isn’t monster in the sense of the monsters in the ‘Thriller’ video though, it’s a quote about the power of rhetoric and the ever-changing nature of man.

Which dead star would welcome you at the pearly gates, and why?
I lost my best friend when I was a teenager so that’s pretty much the only person I would want to see up there when I first arrive. I actually lost two friends this year – DJ Rock Raider and DJ AM – so I’d like to hang out with them too. Oh, and Biggie.

If you were resurrected the day after, who or what would you want to come back as?
I would come back as my brother’s computer because I know it never leaves his sight. I adore him and this means that I would get to be with him all the time.

Describe your vision of heaven…
I don’t really have a concrete vision of it but I guess it’s the most peaceful state you could ever be in. Or the 50% off sale at the Dior store.
