Chloe Moriondo Guides Clash Through ‘SUCKERPUNCH’

It's a blow-by-blow account...

Chloe Moriondo is a force to be reckoned with.

An explicit, uncompromising voice in pop music, her aesthetic is guided towards the future, while also chopping up elements of the past. Slicing into those late 90s mega-bangers, Chloe is able to inject a punk-like spirit of abandon, with their lyrics discussing gender, sexual fluidity, and their total rejection of patriarchal norms.

As Chloe puts it: “I was incredibly angry when I wrote some of these songs, and felt so sick of being perceived as a soft person…”

Amid the caustic anger there’s definitely a sense of fun, however, with Chloe able to play things gleefully over-the-top. Just look at much-loved track ‘Plastic Purse’; “That song is the most fun I’ve ever had writing lyrics—it’s me getting my anger out about stupid indie boys who take advantage of girls, picturing them as these tiny little creatures that I scoop up and then throw into a plastic purse…”

Clash reviewed James Booton reviewed ‘Suckerpunch’, remarking that Chloe has “descended even further into a tantalisingly twisted aesthetic world” on their new album.

Out now, Chloe Moriondo has penned a full guide to ‘SUCKERPUNCH’ for Clash readers – dig in below.

1. Popstar

The result of my insufferable obsession with Kesha, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, and SPECIFICALLY Dirrty Xtina. The album’s first punch!!

 2. Fruity

My own personal fruit flavored California Gurls. She’s super cute.

3. Trophy

A song for angry girls. Girls who dream of keying cars and wear lashes to the airport (but only on the way to the fun destination, not the way back because they party too hard).

4. Knockout

Cutest boxing song known to man. Being sweet but still kind of evil.

5. Hell Hounds

The first song I made off of ‘SUCKERPUNCH’ – a crazy concept song about demon dogs. I wanted to have more fun and I did! ;P

6. Hotel For Clowns

Another crazy concept song. I had the words “hotel for clowns” in my notes for months and it jumped out at me in a session— one of my freakiest and favorite songs. How seasonal!

7. DRESS UP

Definitely the sexiest-yet-kind-of-creepiest song I’ve ever written. An LA-infused song that I think could be in the background of like.. a really shiny yet mildly sleazy Barbie-themed Euphoria episode.

8. Plastic Purse

My favourite song off the record as of right now— it’s about angrily shrinking and then collecting boys. Music boys, boys in beanies, boys you meet after the show on tour, all of them? Shrunk.

9. Celebrity

My dramatique and slightly darker Fame Song. Popstar’s slightly underlyingly sadder little sister. V2 is my favorite, listen for her ;3

10. Cdbaby<3

An energetic yet emotional wind-down for the album. It is a possible second favorite and is so soft and sweet yet dreary.

11. Hearteyes

Love song <3 I was feeling particularly soft and happy and felt the need to add a little more sweetness to the album. Like sprinkles on a shiny cathartic cupcake.

12. Diet Heartbreak

A not-even-situationship faded away in a weird way and left my teenage ass WOUNDED!! This song started as just vocal level testing, but we really liked the weird spacey rhythm and it built up to something much more.

13. Cry

The final outpour!! I hate crying so much but I’m just a girl at the end of the day; an overly emotional, sometimes desperate, occasionally angry girl. I love being one and will never stop, only grow. <3
