Best Of 2010 Albums – Maps And Atlases

17. Perch Patchwork

Math-rock and folk-rock may seem like two disparate ideologies that should never marry but Maps And Atlases are gifted musical matchmakers, taking traditional song structures down novel new avenues without wandering aimlessly up the back passage. There were some fine tunes on here, and numerous moments where one genuinely wondered where on earth they’d end up, which encouraged further listening. What the world was waiting for? Perhaps not, but discerning punters are still sucking the juice from it.

Best Bit: The album’s ear-prickingopening line: “I don’t think there is a sound that I hate more…than the sound of your voice”.
